REVIEW OF NURSING AND MIDWIFERY EDUCATION
AND TRAINING IN THE NORTHERN TERRITORY

The NT Department of Health and Families has commissioned RhED Consulting Pty Ltd to undertake a Review of Nursing and Midwifery Education and Training across the Northern Territory. The aims of the review are to evaluate the access, coordination and integration of nursing and midwifery education and training across the Northern Territory, including studies assistance. The Review will make recommendations on the future of nursing and midwifery education and training across the NT, in providing for a contemporary workforce and integration across education and health, government and non-government sectors.

The target groups for the review are the employers of nurses and midwives across the NT – both government and non-government, the providers of nursing and midwifery education and training, and the nursing and midwifery workforce.

The methodology includes – a literature review and comprehensive mapping process of current providers and activities; interviews and focus groups with those providing, managing and undertaking nursing and midwifery education and training; an electronic survey of nursing staff; and some case studies. The report will provide an analysis of the efficiency, effectiveness and appropriateness of current education and training programs and activities in meeting student and community needs. It will make recommendations for a more cohesive and coordinated approach to the provision of nursing and midwifery education and training across
the whole of the NT including the (a) identification of key roles and responsibilities of government, training providers, professional associations and non-government employers; (b) development of clearer education pathways between providers and health; and (c) resources required. We are seeking your advice and input into this important review.
